Panamanian Beer

It was really rad to see such a booming Panamanian craft beers and brew pubs craze brewing (heheh get it?) during my visit to Panama City. While there were only a few brews that really got my lips smacking and craving more, it was nice to be able to try several thoughtfully crafted beers in Panama.

There were sooooo many more breweries that I didn’t have a chance to try, honestly the craft beer is a hopping industry here and I only tasted a hop in a bucket. muwahahahaha (get it…a hopping industry and a hop in the bucket)

La Rana Dorada Maracuya Sour

La Rana Dorada

Taste (Maracuya Sour): Sweet. Natural freshness, full of fruity flavours.
Feel: Light carbonation, smooth on the tongue.
Finish:  Long lasting sweet fruity flavours.  It was superb and it is important to note that I do NOT like Sour beer…but this one was among my favourites of theirs.

Overall: This sour beer caught me by surprise. It has a light orange peachy colour and smells divine from the moment you crack open the can. I tried several of their craft concoctions. I tried their Porter, their Pils and their Pale Ale in the Casco Viejo restaurant location and I took home a 6 pack of their Maracuya Sour beer.  I loved all 4 that I tried and in order of my favourites: Porter, Maracuya Sour, Pale Ale, Pils. Which is surprising for me because I would typically gravitate to the Pils and Kolsch type beers.

This is a serious win for Sour beers! La Rana Dorada takes the top spot for my favourite beers in Panama.

Casa Bruja

Taste (Gose Lemon Kaffir): Tangy salty lemon
Feel: Bubbly and Sharp, acidic
Finish: Lingering bitter lemon with mixed spice…both on the taste buds and in the exhale

Overall:
If your first sip was sour and salty, your taste buds are working just fine. This gose experiments with kaffir lemon leaves for a refreshing and tangy touch.  Scented with spices and lemon.

I figured if Panama can win me over with the Sours, I would give another one a try. I regret not having to been able to try more Casa Bruja beers.  This is definitely a worth while Panama craft beer to seek out.

I mean let’s be serious here…if they can win a medal at the World Beer Cup…then hell yes!

Panama Beer

Panama

This is just a cheap cheap grocery store beer and most restaurants sell it too. For cheap beers, this is the one I kept stocked in my fridge. I also love that it is called Panama. It’s similar to an MGD, really light beer, easy to drink and pretty refreshing when it is ice cold.  This is a good solid cheap beer.

There wasn’t much different in taste from the Panama Lager except that it is a watered down version.  A tad more corn flavoured which could be why it is slightly sweeter than the Panama Lager.  It’s an ok beer if you are just drinking for the sake of drinking…you won’t get much of an experience out of this one.  It left little impact, but on the flip side…it also didn’t have any harsh off-putting tastes.
