The views, the nature, the hike, the love….It was wonderful to learn about the history, art and culture of Panama through Inés’ eyes…technically, through her heart.
This walking tour was a great opportunity to meet the cultural background of Panamanian urban development from the colonial Era to modern times.
We saw the Santa Ana and Calidonia urban expressions such as street economy activities, artistic murals and architectural design which tells many stories of the last century. We stopped by several historical monuments which depict important events of the local Panamanian story from Panama’s past to its present…The story that shaped the country into what we all love today.
Walking pass the urban area we entered a zone which is surrounded by nature, heading up to the top of Ancon Hill (Cerro Ancón). We passed by a unique development zone that was once part of the USA military establishment in the Panama Canal Zone for almost a century.
We were not fortunate enough to see any exotic animals such as boas, toucans or sloths sadly…perhaps we were too early in the day or perhaps we were not early enough.
Nonetheless, this tour was an epic start to my Friday morning. We met at 7am in order to make it up the hill before the “sol caliente” kicked in.
The hike was about 3.5 hours…we walked 12KM on this walk…navigating around to various points of interest enroute to the destination…the top of Ancon hill. An oasis in the city.
There are many many many highlights to this tour with Ines, one of which is the monument at the top of Ancon Hill dedicated to a famous Panamanian poet named Amelia Denis de Icaza…one of her last works of art was a poem dedicated to her love and lost love of Cerro Ancón…To the Cerro Ancón by Amelia Denis de Icaza.
It expresses how much she loved this land, this Ancón Hill…and how her heart broke when it became part of the USA Panama Canal zone and was no longer part of Panama. This has obviously changed and is no longer the case today…but in her time she wrote this beautiful poem called To the Cerro Ancón…the final sentence ending in…‘you are no longer mine, idolized Ancón!’
