It doesn’t get better than

Sunsetting in Casco Viejo…

Two walking tours on back to back days in the same neighbourhood? You might be asking yourself why would I do that? For 4 reasons!

  1. I wanted to be sure to get out of the apartment so booking a tour was the best way to make that happen. IT DID!
  2. I wanted to walk around at night and being brand new to the area and a solo female traveler, this was the best way to make that happen. IT DID!
  3. I love walking tours and meeting new people. I DID!
  4. I was really banking on the tours to be very different from each other. THEY WERE!

So here is the thing, total honesty…IF you only have time for one tour…personally I would chose the walking tour with Goran that I did on Monday. But because the information and the delivery were completely different I would recommend that you take both.  The tour tonight was strictly history based…there was a massive history lesson delivered tonight and much of it I didn’t know.  As they say…history is made by those who write it. So…the history we are taught in school is different from the history of others.

A perfect example of that…when I was in Colombia last month I took a walking tour and the tour guide told me that Colombia once ‘owned’ Panama…that Panama was part of Colombia. The Colombian tour guide told me that Colombia actually sold Panama for their independence…However, this evening…the same story told by a Panamanian had a different twist. It was not that Colombia sold them but that Panama fought for their independence and their freedom was not ‘bought’. The exact same history with two versions…each version determined and written by the one who experienced it.

This is not the first time this has happened for me during my travels. A similar situation but with the news broadcast 13 years ago…I had just returned from Cuba and then months later was in the United States…I heard the exact same news story but with a completely different twist. From that point on I vowed to never believe one side of the narrative to be gospel.

Back to the walking tour…

We visited many of the same sights as the tour with Goran but with a completely different spin. Rounding out the tour approaching Las Bovedas walkway just in time for the sunset.  It was impeccable timing.
