Trade Snow for Sand
A Perfect Winter Escape in Montego Bay, Jamaica
When winter grips Canada with icy winds and endless shoveling, Montego Bay whispers a different story—warm breezes, turquoise waters, and reggae rhythms that melt away the chill. But our trip wasn’t without surprises. Just days before Jamaica went into a full police-enforced lockdown, we arrived to find the island bracing for change. Massive floods had swept through parts of the country, cutting off roads and closing attractions. Luckily, our hotel sat on higher ground, safe and dry—a calm oasis amid the chaos.
Plan Your Journey
Getting There
Escaping the cold is easier than you think. Direct flights from Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver whisk you to Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in as little as four hours. Airlines like Air Canada, WestJet, and Air Transat offer seasonal deals, making paradise surprisingly accessible. Once you land, you’re minutes from the beach—Montego Bay’s airport is practically on the shoreline.
Wake Up to Waves
Morning: Beaches and Bliss
Despite the restrictions, the beaches were open—and they were everything we needed. Doctor’s Cave Beach greeted us with powdery white sand and calm, turquoise waters. While the country was tightening rules, here we found peace, floating in mineral-rich seas said to have healing powers. For a few hours, the world felt normal.
Adventure Awaits
Midday: Limited but Lovely
Normally, Montego Bay is a playground of rafting, waterfalls, and historic tours. But with roads washed out and police checkpoints popping up, our options were slim. We traded big excursions for simple pleasures—watching the sunset from the hotel terrace, listening to reggae drift through the warm night air. It wasn’t the trip we planned, but it became the trip we needed.
Taste Jamaica
Local Flavors You Can’t Miss
Even with restrictions, the flavors of Jamaica didn’t disappoint. We savored jerk chicken, smoky and spicy, cooked over pimento wood. Breakfast brought ackee and saltfish, Jamaica’s national dish, alongside fried dumplings. And for a sweet finish, rum cake—a taste of celebration even in uncertain times. These dishes told the story of resilience and joy, no matter what.
Dance Into Dusk
Evening Magic
Nightlife was quiet, but the island’s spirit never dimmed. We sipped rum punch under a sky streaked with stars, knowing that in just a few days, the country would lock down completely. It was bittersweet—an escape wrapped in gratitude, a reminder to savor every moment.
