sip and create – plant workshop

When you think craft…you think beer, not this time!

This was so fun…I found this event on eventbrite and I thought it sounded super interesting. I have never done a plant workshop before AND it was at a winery that included the tasting in the workshop fee.

First time for everything

First Plant Workshop, First Canadian Wine Tasting

This workshop was held at Priest Creek Winery and wow what a stunning venue. I want to say this venue has rustic allure, but often when people use the work ‘rustic’ they mean to say it’s outdated and old…but not this time. The tasting room is rustic with intent and has a brilliant aesthetic appeal mixing stone, wood, iron and nature in every thoughtful design. So I say Rustic Intent…this place was built with Rustic Intent. It’s stunning and inviting.

The name Priest Creek was chosen to pay tribute to the heritage of the land. This Estate was part of a parcel of land farmed by the Mission in the mid 1800ā€™s. Priest Creek runs behind the property and runs into Mission Creek where it is said Father Pandosy planted the first grapes in the valley for wine.

This was my first tasting in Canada and also my first Riesling, my first Gewurztraminer and my first and favourite Cabernet Franc.

What even is Kokedama?

Kokedama is a style of Japanese bonsai, where the plants root system is wrapped in moss and bound with string, transforming it to a decorative piece of art.

In this workshop we were guided through the process of creating a Kokedama and the instructor was so kind and patient and just made the experience perfectly on point. The event was put on by Stems&Stones, they offer many classes around the Okanagan…I highly recommend you make a fun night of it.

The workshop included:

  • -2-hour kodedama workshop (7-9pm)
  • Complimentary wine tasting (6:30-7pm)
  • First glass of wine

When we arrived, first we enjoyed the tasting and then were chose our favourite to enjoy a glass during the workshop. We were all presented with a ball of string, two plants of our choosing and a ton of moss.

The technique is really cool and actually very easy once you get the hang of repetitive wrapping.

Everyone needed a hands on showing of the wrap up close and the instructor assisted everyone with getting started…..but, me being left handed I had to unwrap the entire beginning and start again because I wrap backwards. (buwahaha, ‘rap backwards’ like Criss Cross)

buwahahahaha

It’s Frank…hanging by a thread

Once everyone finished creating their two plant masterpieces…we had to name our plants and their names were imprinted on these cute little charms. I named mine “Magic” & “Places”. While my names are personal to me, the most comical moment of the evening was when one of the ladies in the workshop was walking around with her plant, which she incorporated a hanging feature with the string, then said “Meet Frank, Frank is my husband….he is hanging by a string.” In hindsight, I should have got her contact cause that sh*t was funny and I bet she is a blast.
