My New Catch Phrase

I ask myself this question at least 3 times daily

I knew that I would need to go to the hair salon during this adventure. I typically go to my stylist every 6 weeks at home in Vancouver, Canada to cover the signs of my age and touch up my roots.

I made peace with this thought long before I left Canada and the last time I saw Diana it was an emotional day to say the least. I would like to think that I am an easy client and require simple things…but my hair…is not to be messed with.

I made peace with accepting that I could potentially look like a hot mess until my return to Canada for Diana to salvage my pride through her art.

I asked for referrals on Expat groups, I scoured reviews online and read them over and over again before I finally committed to putting my fate in someone’s hands. I decided to go with a salon named Diego Moya Salon & Day Spa. So I figured I would get a Manicure and Pedicure while I was at it as well.

Now there are no prices on their website so I had no idea what I was in store for, but the booking process was easy peasy. Just message them on Whatsapp and tell them what you need and when and voila! All set.

I told them I just needed my roots covered! A simple simple request.

The day came and I woke up feeling super anxious. I haven’t felt that much stress in a long long time, but I had waited long enough and my age was showing so something had to be done.

I go into the spa, I reiterate that I just need my roots done. (The translation was provided to me by two of my Spanish speaking girlfriends, Diana from Panama and Veronica from Mexico
Besa a mis amigas)

They take me upstairs and I sit at a desk and they are multi tasking queens! Never have I ever had someone apply the hair colour simultaneously while getting a Manicure. LOL.

Let me set the stage for you….ever time I get my hair coloured at home, I swear the product used is NOT white. But this was white, but I hardly speak Spanish so I just wait patiently while she applies the product to my hair. The hair dresser finishes and goes away while the product does its thing and about 20 minutes later my scalp started to feel like it does when you are bleaching your hair and panic starts to set in.

My heart is racing and I want to ask if they are using bleach on my hair. (PS I am fully aware that it was 100% possible that my mind was playing tricks on me because I was already stressed about damaging my hair)

Why is that bad you ask? Technically it’s not awful, but I NEVER bleach my roots….my roots are my natural DARK BROWN colour…yes, I have blonde ish highlights in my hair, a sort of a balayage look.

If I say so myself, my hair is pretty rad and that’s 100% thanks to my super talented hair dress in Vancouver. (FB: @diana.theodora1 If you are in Vancouver and need a super rad stylist. She works out of Swank Hair Esthetics in East Vancouver)

So I finally caved and asked the lady doing my manicure…”Is this bleach?” She could smell my fear, I know it and she said “no no, not bleach”.

So I said ok…meanwhile I texted my stylist in Vancouver panicking and I am texting my girlfriend Veronica freaking out. I am no fool, there is nothing they can do but I needed some support something fierce! LOL. Veronica assures me that no matter what happens, it’s an experience and now I know what to ask for next time. HAHAHA and follows it with “I bet you will look good as a blonde”. DUDE! Not helpful at all. hahahaha, but super funny. (I love you Vero)

Soooo, after more time passes and they are wrapping up my pedicure the hair stylist returns upstairs to check on my hair. The manicurist and the stylist exchanges words and have a good chuckle. (clearly at my panic mode) Then the stylist assures me it is not bleach. So I said “My roots will be my natural colour right?” She says yes yes, don’t worry. But still, I will relax when the product is off my hair and I can see for myself that my roots are not blonde and I still have all my hair.

She takes me downstairs to rinse the product from my hair. I listen intently for gasps because I can’t see anything, but I heard nothing….then we head back upstairs where I sit in front of a mirror for the first time and get a good look.

Drum roll…..

It’s perfection. Hallelujah!

She continues to blow dry my hair and style it and it looks great and my heart returns to its normal pace. Now obviously, I had absolutely nothing to worry about, but I have only ever had my hair done one other time out of the country in a foreign language (in Japan) and that was 25+ years ago when all I wanted was a cut.

Aside from my own personal panic attack, I would indeed go back to them again and if I were staying in Cartagena any longer, I would be booking an appointment soon. I left feeling like a  million bucks.

Not only was it exactly what I had wanted….all in for the root touch up, manicure and pedicure it was only $60 CAD. What is happening? Seriously, just the manicure and pedicure at home cost $80 CAD. When I left I told her that it was perfect and that my heart was happy. Thank you thank you.
