Visiting Ueno Zoo & Ueno Park: A Perfect Morning in Tokyo
If you’re looking for a relaxing half-day adventure in Tokyo, Ueno Zoo and Ueno Park offer the perfect combination of wildlife, gardens, and city scenery. Arriving when the gates opened gave us the rare opportunity to experience one of Tokyo’s most popular attractions in peaceful silence before the crowds arrived.
Arriving Before the Crowds
The Best Time to Visit Ueno Zoo
Walking through the entrance just as Ueno Zoo opened felt like stepping into a different Tokyo. The usual hustle and bustle of the city seemed miles away as we wandered nearly empty pathways, stopping whenever we wanted without navigating around large groups of people.
The zoo is surprisingly large, spread across two sections connected by a monorail route and pedestrian access. We found that 2 to 3 hours was plenty of time to comfortably explore the entire zoo, view the major exhibits, and enjoy a leisurely pace without feeling rushed.
As the morning progressed, we noticed more and more visitors arriving. By the time we left around noon, the pathways were bustling with families, school groups, and tourists. If you’re hoping for quieter animal viewing and better photo opportunities, arriving right at opening is absolutely worth it.
More Than Just a Zoo
Exploring the Animals of Ueno Zoo
As Japan’s oldest zoo, Ueno Zoo is home to hundreds of species from around the world. While the giant pandas are undoubtedly the star attraction, sadly they were not available on this visit, however still we enjoyed wandering through the diverse exhibits featuring elephants, gorillas, tigers, polar bears, and countless birds and reptiles.
What stood out most was how much walking there is between exhibits. Rather than feeling crowded together, the enclosures are spread throughout tree-lined pathways that make the visit feel more like a stroll through a park than a traditional zoo.
For families visiting Tokyo, it’s an easy attraction to add to any itinerary. The zoo is centrally located and accessible by multiple train lines, making it a convenient stop before exploring other nearby neighbourhoods.
A Park Worth Exploring Too
Taking Time to Enjoy Ueno Park
Even if you’re not a zoo enthusiast, Ueno Park itself is worth visiting. The park offers wide walking paths, ponds, museums, shrines, and plenty of shady areas to escape Tokyo’s summer heat.
After spending the morning with the animals, we wandered through sections of the park and enjoyed the contrast between the natural green spaces and the busy city surrounding them. It reminded us how many pockets of tranquility can still be found in one of the world’s largest cities.

Should You Visit Ueno Zoo?
Absolutely. Ueno Zoo isn’t just about seeing animals; it’s about experiencing a quieter side of Tokyo. Arriving early allowed us to enjoy peaceful pathways, uncrowded viewing areas, and a relaxed pace before the city awakened around us.
If you’re travelling with children, love wildlife, or simply want a break from Tokyo’s neon lights and busy streets, Ueno Zoo and Ueno Park make an excellent morning excursion. Plan for 2 to 3 hours at the zoo, arrive when it opens, and you’ll experience the best of what this Tokyo landmark has to offer.
