And There You Are!

Face to Face with a…Spomenik

Disclaimer: Spomeniks are all over each of the countries that were part of former Yugoslavia. Here is a Spomenik Database that I found.

Let’s be clear about the Spomeniks! They represent many different things and they are the legacy of the past and an outlook to the future.  They are the memory of suffering, symbols of resentment, objects of anger, and testaments to triumph.

They are ‘spomenik’…which means ‘monument’. A series of abstract brutalist monuments that were built from the 1960s – 1990s across former Yugoslavia. The main intent was to honor the people’s resistance struggle during the WWII against occupation and oppression.

They commemorate the crimes that happened during the region’s occupation, but they also memoralize the revolution that defeated them.

However, these monuments were, and still are, more than just the sum of their parts. They are valued for their historical significance, but also for their avant-garde and forward-looking designs.

And today I went on a mission to find as many as I could on foot.

Beautiful Belgrade
