Weaving Stories

My Journey into Métis Pine Needle Basketry

Travel isn’t just about places—it’s about the hands that shape traditions and the stories woven into everyday objects. On my recent adventure, I had the privilege of joining a workshop led by a Métis Elder, learning the art of crafting a traditional pine needle basket. What began as a simple gathering of needles turned into a lesson in heritage, patience, and beauty.

Hands-On Heritage

A Brief History of Pine Needle Basketry

Basket weaving is one of humanity’s oldest crafts, with roots stretching back thousands of years. Among Indigenous communities across North America, baskets were more than containers—they were tools for survival, carriers of culture, and expressions of artistry. For the Métis, whose identity bridges First Nations and European traditions, basketry reflects this unique blend: practical yet deeply symbolic, connecting land, resourcefulness, and resilience.

Nature’s Gift

The Ponderosa Pine

Our workshop began with a collection of harvested Ponderosa pines, their long, flexible needles that had carpeted the forest floor. These needles, prized for their strength and pliability, are perfect for coiling into baskets. Their subtle fragrance lingers as you work, a reminder that this craft is rooted in nature’s generosity. Each needle carries a whisper of its origin—sunlight, soil, and seasons—all woven into something enduring.

Who Are the Métis?

The Métis people emerged in the 18th century from the union of European fur traders and Indigenous women, creating a distinct culture with its own language, traditions, and artistry. Today, Métis craftsmanship is a celebration of this heritage—a way to honor ancestors while keeping traditions alive. Sitting at the table, guided by an Elder’s wisdom, felt like stepping into a living history book.

The Finished Basket: A Tiny Treasure
After hours of coiling, stitching, and listening to stories, my basket was complete—a small, rustic piece that seemed to hum with meaning. It wasn’t perfect, but that’s the beauty of handmade art: every curve tells a story of learning, laughter, and connection. It’s more than a basket; it’s a memory I can hold in my hands.
