A Two-Night Getaway to Nikko: Temples, Waterfalls & Mountain Scenery

Just two hours north of Tokyo, Nikko feels like a completely different world. Surrounded by forests, mountains, waterfalls, and some of Japan’s most spectacular historic sites, it offers the perfect escape from the city’s crowds and concrete. We spent two nights exploring UNESCO World Heritage shrines, scenic lakes, winding mountain roads, and peaceful walking trails, making Nikko one of the highlights of our Japan adventure.

Japan’s Most Ornate Shrines

Discovering Nikko Toshogu Shrine

The crown jewel of Nikko is undoubtedly Toshogu Shrine.

Unlike many temples and shrines throughout Japan that emphasize simplicity, Toshogu is elaborate, colourful, and richly decorated. Intricate carvings, gold leaf details, and beautifully crafted gates make it feel almost like an outdoor museum.

Walking through the forested shrine complex, it was easy to understand why the site is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage destination. Every path seemed to reveal another stunning building or hidden detail.

Among the many famous carvings are the Three Wise Monkeys, whose “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” poses have become known around the world.

Even after visiting numerous shrines throughout our trip, Nikko Toshogu stood out as something truly special.

Into the Mountains

Exploring Lake Chuzenji and the Okunikko Region

One of the advantages of spending two nights in Nikko is having enough time to venture into the mountains beyond the historic district.

The road climbs dramatically into Okunikko, a scenic area filled with forests, lakes, marshlands, and mountain views. Known for its famous switchbacks and spectacular scenery, the journey itself is part of the experience.

Lake Chuzenji quickly became one of our favourite spots. Surrounded by mountains and peaceful shorelines, it felt worlds away from the busy streets of Tokyo.

The cooler temperatures offered a welcome break from the summer heat and made exploring especially enjoyable.

Standing Before Kegon Falls

A visit to Nikko wouldn’t be complete without seeing Kegon Falls.

Dropping dramatically from Lake Chuzenji, the waterfall plunges nearly 100 metres into the gorge below and is considered one of Japan’s three most famous waterfalls.

The sheer power of the water combined with the surrounding mountain scenery made it one of the most impressive natural sights we encountered during our trip.

Whether viewed from above or from the observation area below, it’s the type of place that makes you stop, admire the view, and simply take it all in.

Quiet Moments in Nature

Slowing Down and Enjoying Nikko

What we loved most about Nikko wasn’t a specific shrine or viewpoint.

It was the feeling.

The combination of towering cedar trees, rushing rivers, mountain air, and centuries of history creates a peaceful atmosphere that encourages visitors to slow down. After several busy days exploring Tokyo, Nikko provided a welcome opportunity to breathe, wander, and appreciate a different side of Japan.

Some of our favourite memories came from simply walking through forested paths, listening to the sounds of nature, and enjoying the scenery between destinations.

Why You Should Spend More Than a Day in Nikko

Many travelers visit Nikko as a day trip, but staying two nights completely changes the experience.

Rather than rushing between attractions, you have time to explore both the historic shrine district and the stunning mountain landscapes of Okunikko. You can enjoy quieter mornings, linger at scenic viewpoints, and discover places that day-trippers often miss.

Nikko offers an incredible combination of culture and nature that is difficult to find elsewhere in Japan. Between UNESCO World Heritage shrines, mountain lakes, spectacular waterfalls, and peaceful forests, it became one of the most rewarding destinations on our itinerary.
