New York New York

The City that Never Sleeps

Let’s kick of the week adventure with a little information and our plan of attack.

New York City comprises 5 boroughs where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic Ocean. At its core is Manhattan, a densely populated borough thatā€™s among the worldā€™s major commercial, financial and cultural centers. Its iconic sites include skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building and sprawling Central Park. Broadway theater is staged in neon-lit Times Square.

If youā€™re not sure what the 5 boroughs of New York City are, theyā€™re the five districts that make up NYC: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. You can think of them like cities, and each one contains several neighborhoods. My favourites being Chelsea and Greenwich Village. If I ever return to New York, I would stay in one of these hoods.

We spent the bulk of our time in Manhattan and broke the week down by neighbourhoods within Manhattan.Ā  This would leave us plenty of time to relax as well and not be so hustlely and bustley about it. LOL

Typically I am the planner, but this vacay was all about the kidlet so when it came to attractions and food, she picked them all. I just laid out the logistics of locations.

Manhattan

Midtown

Undoubtedly the most popular among the neighbourhoods and right in the middle of it all. Our hotel was just on the edge of Midtown and Hell’s Kitchen. Which by all accounts was near to everything and we walked and walked and walked. We nearly walked the entire ‘island’. Our average days were approx. 20KM /day. Not bad at all.

Midtown is one of the most popular neighborhoods in New York City, and for good reason. If you are in New York, you will surely be in Midtown to see all the well-known landmarks.

You can see the impressive Empire State Building, the bustling Rockefeller Center, and other attractions like the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, and the New York Public Library. Next to the library, youā€™ll find Bryant Park, which always has something fun to do.

And of course, the famous Times Square and Fifth Avenue is in Midtown.

Verdict: I love a big city, let’s be clear about that. The history is deep and the cultures diverse….but it is just like any other big city. Sorry to all the lovers of New York.Ā
