Hungarian Wine

Quintessential Hungarian Wine Experience

Visiting Hungarian wineries is a special experience. Winemakers take the time to personally welcome you at their tables, pouring generous glasses of wine as they reveal the details of their wines, terroirs, and personal histories.

Focus my evening on educating myself about Hungarian wine and food culture, I descended into an underground restaurant and even further back into the brick laden cellar for an evenings of a wine tasting classes in a private backroom of romantic and mysterious cellar.

The Tasting Table is a wine cellar located in a historic building in Budapest’s Palace District where their sommeliers lead daily wine tastings, host wine dinners and private events in the stunning open kitchen.

Be sure not to miss the wine shop across the street that is fully stocked with an amazing curated cheese selection, unique Hungarian Wines and spirits.

Wine Tastings in Budapest

Essentials of Hungarian Wine

At 6pm I began my crash course on Hungary’s increasingly fabulous wines featuring a sommelier-led evening tasting of 8 fine wines paired with a selection of food pairings.

Where do you start tasting wine in a country with nearly 100 native grape varietals, 22 wine regions, and plenty of incomprehensible names?

Over two hours I consumed 8 tastings and a great deal of information on Hungarian wine—including the history, the major regions, the important varietals, unique characteristics and styles, and promising trends.

The final wine in the tasting was a glass of sweet Tokaj aszú wine, one of the world’s greatest sweet wines and an essential part of Hungary’s wine story.
