No visit to Harajuku is complete without a walk along the famous Takeshita Street.

This narrow pedestrian street is packed with fashion boutiques, souvenir shops, snack vendors, and enough people-watching opportunities to keep you entertained for hours. Everywhere we looked there was something eye-catching, from colourful clothing displays and themed stores to towering ice cream creations and sweet treats.

The atmosphere is energetic, youthful, and unlike anywhere else in Tokyo. Even if you’re not planning to shop, simply experiencing the buzz of Takeshita Street is worth the visit.

It quickly became clear why Harajuku has long been considered the heart of Japan’s youth fashion culture.

Just a few steps away from the busy shopping streets, Harajuku reveals a completely different personality.

We wandered into quieter side streets filled with stylish boutiques, cafés, and beautifully designed buildings that felt worlds away from the crowds. The contrast was remarkable. One moment we were immersed in the excitement of Takeshita Street, and the next we were enjoying a peaceful stroll through a much calmer part of the neighborhood.

These quieter areas became some of our favourite places to explore because they offered a chance to slow down and appreciate Harajuku beyond its famous attractions.

Finding Nature Among the City Streets

One of the things that surprised us most about Harajuku was how much greenery could be found nearby.

Despite being surrounded by one of Tokyo’s busiest shopping districts, the area offers pockets of nature that provide a welcome break from the crowds and summer heat. The combination of modern city life and peaceful green spaces is one of the things Tokyo does exceptionally well.

After navigating busy shopping streets, these quieter corners provided the perfect opportunity to rest, recharge, and take in a different side of the city.
