First Impressions of Asakusa

Wandering Through Nakamise Shopping Street

Asakusa has an energy that feels completely different from other parts of Tokyo. The streets surrounding Sensō-ji are packed with traditional shops, food stalls, and souvenir vendors, creating an atmosphere that feels timeless despite the modern city skyline in the distance.

We took our time wandering through the shopping streets, stopping often to browse everything from handmade crafts and Japanese snacks to colorful lucky charms and keepsakes. It’s one of those places where there is something interesting around every corner, and the best plan is often to have no plan at all.

The closer we got to the temple grounds, the busier the streets became, but the lively atmosphere only added to the experience.

A View You Shouldn’t Miss

The Best Free View in Asakusa

Before heading to Sensō-ji, we made a stop at the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center. Most visitors walk right past it, but those who take the elevator to the observation deck are rewarded with one of the best views in the neighborhood.

From the rooftop, we enjoyed unobstructed views of Tokyo Skytree rising above the skyline and a spectacular bird’s-eye view of Sensō-ji Temple and Nakamise Street below. Watching the crowds flow through the temple complex from above offered a completely different perspective and provided some fantastic photo opportunities.

Best of all, the view is completely free.

Beginning Our Goshuin Journey

Receiving Our First Temple Stamp at Sensō-ji

One of the experiences we were most excited about was starting our goshuin collection, and Sensō-ji became the perfect place to receive the first stamp in our shrine and temple stamp book.

Walking through the massive Kaminarimon Gate and into the temple grounds felt like stepping back in time. The scent of incense drifted through the air as visitors paused to offer prayers and take in the beauty of Tokyo’s oldest temple.

Receiving that first goshuin made the experience feel even more meaningful. It wasn’t just a stamp. It marked the beginning of a journey that we knew would continue throughout Japan, with each new temple and shrine adding another memory to the collection.

Exploring burns a surprising number of calories, which made our lunch stop feel well-earned.

Among the countless food options in the area, we settled on a plate of freshly cooked gyoza. Golden and crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and served piping hot, they were exactly what we needed after a morning of walking.

One of the joys of Asakusa is that food is everywhere. Whether you’re craving traditional Japanese sweets, savory street snacks, or a sit-down meal, you won’t have to look far to find something delicious.

Asakusa offers everything many travelers imagine when they dream about visiting Japan. Historic temples, traditional shopping streets, local food, cultural experiences, and incredible city views can all be found within a short walk of one another.

What made it especially memorable for us was the contrast. In a single morning, we admired centuries-old architecture, gazed at Tokyo’s futuristic skyline, received our first goshuin stamp, and enjoyed one of our first memorable meals in Japan.

Whether you’re visiting Tokyo for the first time or returning to explore more deeply, Asakusa is a place that deserves far more than a quick visit. Slow down, wander the side streets, take in the views, and let the neighborhood reveal its charm at its own pace.
