The Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET)

Becoming a Sommelier

Why get accredited you might ask me? The answer is simple…I live in Kelowna, BC now. Kelowna is smack in the middle of the Okanagan which is considered The Napa Valley of the North, Canadian Wine Country. Because I have never really been a wine drinker, I am more of a Beer and Bourbon girl with the odd cigar here and there, I figured that I should learn a thing or two about Wine so that I am not a complete moron to all things wine.

So as they say…When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

To be honest, level is a true beginner course. The course content was very straight forward and just seemed like logical information. I imagine it’s pretty hard to fail Level 1.

Course Content

Level 1

This was an introductory course suited to those with a basic knowledge as well as the total beginner. I learned how to select the perfect bottle with confidence, how to taste and describe wines, all about food and wine pairing, and taste 14 beautiful wines.

There was a good mix of students with different goals for taking Level 1, it’s definitely for all kinds of wine lovers for business certification, or pleasure.

I don’t know if I will take it further or not, Level 2 isn’t out of the question and might be something I entertain next summer for sure.

Things I learned

  • How to taste and describe wines
  • How to pair food and wine
  • The characteristics of the classic grape varieties
  • Grape growing, terroir and winemaking
  • Storage and service
  • Champagne & Port
  • Tips on buying wine

Fun Fact

The Court of Master Sommeliers says there are 273 professionals worldwide who have received the title of Master Sommelier since it was established in 1969. WOW, less than 300 people have completed the Masters in 50 years….that says one thing to me, becoming a Master is tough tough journey.
