Latvijas Nacionālā Opera un Balets

The Latvian National Opera and Ballet is an opera house and opera company in the heart of Riga. Its repertoire includes performances of opera and ballet.

The Latvian National Opera and Ballet performs the functions of State Theatre for the development of the genre of opera and ballet. In shaping and implementing the artistic policy of the theatre, which was established in 1918.

The Latvian National Opera and Ballet’s productions highlight the values of classical and romantic art, while also contemporary forms of expression. The Latvian National Opera and Ballet is open to the Latvian public and to visitors: it gives guest performances and regularly collaborates with many outstanding guest soloists, conductors, choreographers, directors, stage designers, costume designers, and lighting and video designers, both at home and abroad.

The Great Hall, designed by architect Ludwig Bohnstedt and built in 1863, seats 952 people, while the New Hall, designed by architect Juris Gertmanis and completed in 2001, seats 241.

Macbeth is Giuseppe Verdi’s tenth opera and his first to be inspired by William Shakespeare.
