The New Cemetery of Belgrade

The eternal resting place for more than 700,000 people, including 48,000 graves, 37 family chapels, approx. 1500 sculptures made by exceptional sculptors of many generations. Many distinguished statesman, artists, scientists and nation’s endeavors were buried in the New Cemetery of Belgrade.

There are memorials for many battles that happened in the last 135 years. Those include: military graves from Serbian-Ottoman War (1876-1877), Balkan Wars and World Wars.

In addition to the graves of the citizens, and the areas dedicated to the wars, the cemetery also includes special sections: the Alley of the Greats and the Alley of Distinguished Citizens, where some of the most important people in the history of Serbia rest.

The New Cemetery in Belgrade has been registered since 1983 in the Central Register of Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Serbia as the state’s cultural and historical heritage of a great importance.

It is also recognized as an Open Air Museum due to its historical and memorial resources, its beautiful aesthetics and is a highly rates artistic achievement, it holds intangible cultural heritage, and as so has gained its place among the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE) since 2004 and it is part of European Cemeteries Route.

It is well worth the time I spent strolling such an immaculate resting place for the souls that paved the way of our futures.
