The Balkan Region

Largest Orthodox Church

The largest Orthodox Church in the Balkan region, and the second largest in the world, St Sava is towering building in Serbia’s capital. Even with all the buildings in Belgrade, it sits high on the Vračar plateau and you can see the church’s white granite and marble walls from any approach to Belgrade, while the 50 bells that sound noon ring out across the city. Unfortunately I haven’t heard them yet.

Construction began in 1935 and ended in 1989. The biggest challenge was raising the central dome, all 4,000 tons of which was assembled on the ground and hoisted into place.

Along the way

Kalenić Pijaca

The biggest Belgrade open-air market is a vibrant place which valiantly fights off competition from supermarkets. Besides the obvious fresh fruits, veggies, meat, eggs, fish and seafood, honey, pickles and craftwork, you will find just about anything you need here. The green market is lined with bakeries, pastry houses, restaurants and small shops. Try and visit this wonderful green market before you leave Belgrade. Actually, I encourage you to visit as many of the green markets as you can.
