The moment we arrived in Shin-Okubo, the atmosphere felt different from anywhere else we had visited in Tokyo.
Signs in Korean lined the streets, K-pop music filled the air, and groups of friends wandered from shop to shop carrying bags full of snacks, cosmetics, and merchandise. The neighborhood buzzed with energy but felt welcoming and approachable.
What makes Shin-Okubo so interesting is that it doesn’t feel manufactured for tourists. It’s a living community where culture, food, and everyday life come together, creating an authentic experience right in the heart of Tokyo.

Every street seems packed with tempting food options. Korean fried chicken, hotteok, tteokbokki, kimbap, corn dogs, and countless other specialties compete for your attention. The hardest part isn’t finding something to eat. It’s deciding what to try first.
One of the best ways to experience the neighborhood is simply to wander and sample a few different foods along the way. The aromas drifting from restaurants and food stalls make it nearly impossible to leave hungry.
Even after spending time in Japan enjoying traditional Japanese cuisine, it was fun to experience a completely different side of Tokyo’s food scene.
Shopping for K-Pop and Beauty Products

Beyond the food, Shin-Okubo is famous for its shopping.
Storefronts overflow with K-pop albums, posters, collectibles, beauty products, skincare items, and fashion accessories. Fans of Korean music and entertainment could easily spend hours browsing the many specialty stores throughout the district.
Even if K-pop isn’t your thing, the energy is infectious. Everywhere we looked, visitors were excitedly searching for their favorite artists, discovering new products, or gathering around displays of the latest trends.
The neighborhood has an upbeat, youthful atmosphere that makes it enjoyable to explore regardless of how much you know about Korean culture.
More Than Just K-Pop
Experiencing a Different Side of Modern Tokyo
What surprised us most was how international Shin-Okubo felt.
After visiting Tokyo’s historic temples, traditional gardens, and bustling electronics districts, Shin-Okubo showcased yet another layer of the city. It highlighted Tokyo’s multicultural side and demonstrated how influences from across Asia have become part of the city’s character.
Walking through the neighborhood felt like travelling to another destination without ever leaving Tokyo.
It’s a reminder that some of the city’s most interesting experiences come from exploring beyond the famous landmarks.
