Japanese Lesson 8: Particles (に, で, へ, と)
Particles (に, で, へ, と)
- に = destination/time
- で = location of action
- と = “with”
- Practice: location/schedule sentences
に (ni) – Location POINT / Time / Purpose
に marks:
- a specific point in time
- a specific location where something exists
- a destination (if the result matters)
- a purpose (with verbs of movement like 行く)
📌 Core thought:
に = a fixed point or goal.
✔️ Examples
場所(place)
- 部屋にいる。
“I’m in the room.” (existence)
時(time)
- 7時に起きます。
“I wake up at 7.”
目的(purpose)
- 日本へ勉強しに行きます。
“I’m going to Japan to study.”
行き先(destination)
- 学校に行く。
“Go to school.” (destination as a goal)
で (de) – Place of Action / Method / Tool
で marks:
- where an action happens
- how something is done (transport, tool, material, method)
📌 Core thought:
で = the setting or method for an action.
✔️ Examples
場所(where the action happens)
- 学校で勉強する。
“Study at school.”
手段(method/transport)
- 電車で行く。
“Go by train.”
材料(material)
- 木で作る。
“Made of wood.”
範囲(group/area)

へ (e) – Direction / Movement Toward
へ marks direction only.
It’s softer and more abstract than に.
📌 Core thought:
へ = toward (but not necessarily arriving).
✔️ Examples
-
日本へ行く。
“I’m going to Japan.”
(Emphasis on direction, not the goal) -
右へ曲がる。
“Turn right.”
に vs へ (quick distinction)
| に | へ |
|---|---|
| arrival / destination as a goal | just direction |
| “to (this exact place)” | “toward this way” |
In daily speech, に and へ are often interchangeable for movement verbs — but に feels more practical, へ more directional.
と (to) – With / And / Quoting
と marks:
- a companion (“with someone”)
- listing items (“and”)
- quotes (“that…”)
- reciprocal actions
📌 Core thought:
と = together / and / quoting.
✔️ Examples
Comrade (with someone)
- 友だちと行く。
“Go with a friend.”
Listing concrete items
- りんごとバナナを買った。
“I bought apples and bananas.”
Quoting
- 彼は「行く」と言った。
