The Baltics
Why Latvia you ask me?
There are two very simple answers.
- It’s known to be a authentically relaxed place oozing with charm and great food.
- 3 years ago when I was living in Budapest I went on an evening walking tour one random day and by chance and luck I met Ilze, who is Latvian and we were like magnets becoming instant friends and for 3 years we have stayed in touch over FB messenger, promising to connect in real life again one day… and I always keep my promises so here I am, visiting her in her country.
Culinary Exploits
Discovering Latvian Rye Garlic Bread
FOLKKLUBS ALA PAGRABS | Traditional pub in heart of old Riga
Folkklubs ALA Pargrabs (translation meaning: Folk-club Cave (Ala=cave) in the basement) is a unique place in Old Riga! The most authentic Latvian tavern with a twist. A place where you can experience culture, music, delicious food and enjoy conversations in good company. Latvian folk and world music, traditional and modern Latvian cuisine, Latvian dance evenings and Latvian and world folk music concerts! A special atmosphere is created by being in historical premises – ancient wine cellars, where cozy conversations over a glass of beer and boisterous dances accompanied by music take place place between the old vaults.
I had the pleasure of meeting of a couple of Ilze’s friends here and hung out in this spectacular venue enjoying some great company. Plus I was introduced to Latvian Rye Garlic Bread which I now have a very strong addiction to and every time I smell garlic I think fondly of this delightful melt in my mouth dream come true. A must try food for everyone.
